President Update – September 2018
Spring is here and the start of the beach patrolling season is around the corner. Victoria has unfortunately seen an increase in coastal drownings over the past couple of years. In recognition of these tragedies and in response to LSV’s bid for further funding to reduce drownings, the Victorian State Government is providing LSV with funding for two years to provide an expanded Paid Lifeguard service.
For Williamstown Swimming and Life Saving Club this is important news as we have been selected as one of the new sites where Paid Lifeguard Services will be provided Monday to Friday. LSV’s Paid Lifeguard Service operates as the Australian Lifeguard Service in Victoria, which is the largest provider of services in the State. The Australian Lifeguard Service remains one of the biggest Paid Lifeguard Services in the world and the largest in the southern hemisphere.
The Paid Lifeguard Service will provide support and enhance the existing service that volunteers at Williamstown Swimming and Life Saving Club already provide on weekends and public holidays, over the peak summer period. We all know that Williamstown is one of the busiest beaches in Melbourne and draws many of the diverse communities from across Melbourne’s western suburbs. Many of the people who flock to our beach are recent arrivals to Australia and some have limited swimming and water safety skills. So, while we will have the paid lifeguard service, our volunteer lifeguard service will be as important and needed as ever.
This is a big call out for members to join in the training that will be commencing in mid-October and will continue through the season. So, if you haven’t done your Bronze or need to requalify we encourage you to take up this opportunity. Details of training will be on the Club website and Team App. The year has certainly gone quickly and the Committee and sub-committees have been busy over winter planning for the 18/19 season and all the activities and events that our 1000+ member base enjoy. There are still plenty of opportunities to be involved so if you are interested in being a patroller, competing or being one of the many people who help at the Club please contact myself or one of the committee members. I never cease to be amazed at the incredible skill and talent in our Club!
Thank you on behalf of the WSLSC Committee
