WSLSC will be operating an inclusion program for people of different abilities this summer. If you are keen to have a fun experience at the beach, contact us for further details.
Our model is designed to integrate children into an existing Nipper program by adding another group to the existing Nipper structure.
The program is run at the same time and place as the club’s Nipper program but with modified activities designed to suit their ability. Children are supported by volunteers with a 1:1 ratio and their parents in activities if required.
- To create an environment at the beach which is inclusive for everyone
- To provide participants and families a supportive and friendly experience at the beach.
- To teach lifesaving skills and experience when visiting the beach, with a program designed to meet individual abilities.
Having tried so many sport and social inclusion programs, without much success, we stumbled upon the Starfish Nippers Program at Williamstown SLSC. The programs aim is to provide water safety and awareness while being inclusive to all abilities and it certainly delivers. Oliver connected with the program instantly and always looks forward to Sunday morning at the beach. The volunteers involved in the program are a credit to the club and the community.
Starfish Nippers has been great in developing water and social skills. The volunteers who help the kids are absolutely amazing and our son loves participating each week.
Starfish Nippers is the most inclusive and encouraging program our family has ever come across. The one-to-one support allowed us to take a step back and watch our son play, learn, experience and achieve. Starfish Nippers facilitators and mentors are knowledgeable and understanding. They provide a program that is tailored and accessible to my child’s individual abilities. Sunday mornings at Starfish Nippers is the highlight of the week.
Starfish Nippers is a great and safe way for children with special needs to socialise and have fun while learning safety around water.
